National Stammering Awareness Day – 17th October, 2009, Dublin
Time: 9:30am - 5:30pm
Location: Wynns Hotel, Middle Abbey St. Dublin 1
International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD), held on October 22 each year, began in 1998. ISAD recognizes the growing alliance between Speech & Language Therapists and consumers, who are learning from each other and working together to share, give support, and educate one another and the general public on the impact that stuttering has on individuals' lives.
Online conferences, organized by Dr. Judy Kuster, have been an integral part of International Stuttering Awareness Day since its inception. These can be found at www.stutteringhomepage.com
Irish Stammering Association is proud to be involved with National Stammering Awareness Day in Ireland which will take place on Saturday 17th October in Wynn’s Hotel, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin, starting at 9:30am and finishing at 5:30pm.
The theme of 2009’s International Stuttering Awareness Day is ‘Stuttering: More Than a Tangled Tongue’. The theme reminds us all that stuttering can have a massive impact on people’s lives, more than merely having blocks, repetitions or avoiding.
Various organisations are coming together again this year to share information with people who stammer, their friends, families, Speech and Language Therapists and other professionals.
National Stammering Awareness Day will include:
- Mr Enda Kenny, TD, Leader of Fine Gael
- Mr Sean McKerrnan from the HSE speaking on positive mental health.
- Mr John Wills from "Alone Ireland" speaking on affects of anxiety/stress.
- Mr Joe O Donnell - Regional Director of the Irish McGuire Programme.
- Ms Veronica Lynch - member of the Irish Stammering Association.
- SLT presentation by Ms. Mary O’Dwyer and Ms. Aoife McGuire, European Clinical Specialists in Fluency
- The Irish Stammering Association’s Children’s Drama Project will put on a showcase performance at 2 p.m.
- 10 guest speakers will give short presentations on their personal experiences of stammering.
- Art corner at 1 p.m. for young people who stutter.
Admission for the whole day is free; all are welcome. The NSAD is being sponsored again this year from the profits of “Why I Called My Sister Harry”, a book by Michael O'Shea.
