Report from Galway Self Help Group Meeting

Date: 6 October 2009

Report:

There was a great sense of excitement at this meeting as our numbers increased dramatically. James, our chairperson for the night, welcomed everyone to the meeting.

Then we did a relaxation exercise, went through our 'ground rules' (some guidelines to make sure we all get the most out of the meeting) and made some announcements about upcoming events and activities. In particular we mentioned the National Stammering Awareness Day in Wynn's Hotel in Dublin on Saturday 17th October, and the plans for a Speech and Language Therapist to provide individual and group therapy for any members of our group who are interested.

We then broke up into groups of three to discuss how our speech has been, or anything else that people wished to discuss themselves. This gave us an opportunity to speak without the pressure of doing it in front of the whole group. We then had a break for tea and, after resuming, anybody who so wished could speak in the larger group.

Finally we watched a piece of a video on stammering and then finished up. We hope to have an even bigger attendance at the next meeting so, if you're anywhere near Galway on the evening of Tuesday the 3rd of November, why not come along to our meeting in the Radisson Hotel?
