Resources for Students Who Stammer

When the school year begins you get your uniforms, books and timetables organised. You can also use these resources that make school life easier if you stammer.

The ISA Youth Council created a set of handouts and guides that you can use to explain stammering to your teachers and let them know how to support you in school.

Information Sheets

You can choose the version that works best for you:

  • Information Sheet A – blank, so you can write in your own answers.
  • Example Sheet – shows you some ideas if you’re not sure what to write.
  • Information Sheet B – a one-page sheet with tick boxes, handy if you have lots of different teachers.
  • Information Sheet C – two pages with more detail, plus some ‘secret codes’ you can use to make communication easier.
  • Information Sheet D - for summer camps
  • Information Sheet E - for students completing oral exams

Email Templates and Teacher Guide

If you’d like to let your teachers know about these resources by email or letter, there are templates you can copy and edit. Just fill in your details, add anything that feels important, and send them on.

There’s also a Comprehensive Guide to Understanding and Supporting Students Who Stammer that your teachers can read. It even comes with a simple one-page poster full of helpful tips.

Oral Exams and RACE Guidelines

Oral exams can feel stressful if you stammer, but there’s good news. The latest changes to the Reasonable Accommodations at Certificate Examinations (RACE) guidelines make it clear that students who stammer are entitled to specific supports. To make this easier, the ISA Youth Council have put together new handouts – one for students and one for examiners. These explain how you can be supported in oral exams so that your stammer doesn’t get in the way of showing what you know.

Free to download

All of these resources are free to download, and you can customise them to suit you. You can find also all the resources in one folder here:
